Your Ph.D. Your future?
When: 28.06.2012, at 19:00
Where: Huis De Munter (HOGM 1.85), Naamsestraat 69
The Ph.D. has changed, and continues to change. Although it is still defined as a degree earned through a piece of original research, its role and function in the establishment of a professional career have changed. No longer considered to be a direct route towards an academic position, Ph.D. research has instead become a stepping stone towards multiple careers. This has implications for the way in which Ph.D. researchers are trained and being prepared for the labor market. Skills are the key to your success. This presentation, based on results from policy-relevant research in Flanders and Belgium, will discuss the way in which you as a researcher can make the most of these new challenges.
Dr. Karen Vandevelde is policy advisor at Ghent University and researcher at the Flemish ECOOM Centre for R&D monitoring. She has participated in working groups on researchers’ careers for the Flemish Government, the European Commission and the OECD, and has been invited to speak on researchers’ careers for the QAA Scotland, Vitae (UK), OECD, Flemish Institute for Biotechnology and the Rathenau Institute (NL). Recently, as Ghent University’s “blogger of the week”, she stirred some debate on Flemish universities’ academic career management. Brought to you by PhD Society Leuven.
